This Photo: The Vasa was to be the Swedish king's warship. During a war with Poland in the 1620's, the king, fighting in the mainland (as I recall anyway) commissioned a grand warship with dual gun decks. The designer pleaded that this would make the ship too heavy but he was overruled; this is what the king wanted. So it was built. On its maiden voyage out into the harbor...it immediately sank.

Because the water is so cold in the the harbor in Stockholm, the worms that normally eat the wood of ships cannot live, so the Vasa, amazingly, survived virtually intact. It was discovered in the 50's in great condition, and a years-long effort to raise the ship and preserve it began. Now you can see this great ship for yourself if you visit Stockholm - it has its own museum.
