Portland Neighborhoods Guide

Portland Neighborhoods Guide: Johns Landing

Pros:

  • Close to downtown and OHSU
  • Close to Willamette River

Cons:

  • Not a real "homey" or relaxing neighborhood

Tucked into a narrow strip of land south of Downtown between the Terwilliger Curves and the Willamette River, Johns Landing is conveniently located for working at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) just up on Marquam Hill. Two busy roads, Macadam Avenue and Corbett Avenue, cut through the neighborhood, making it feel busy and not particularly welcoming to pedestrians. I-5 kind of constrains the area too on the hill above the neighborhood, making it harder to drive in and out of the area.

Although there is bus service on both Corbett and Macadam into Downtown Portland, the area still feels like it requires a car or a bike. You probably won't be walking downtown from here.

The neighborhood seems like a transient area - students and residents - instead of a permanent settlement, without a sense of home. There are a lot of condos especially down at the riverfront.

On the upside, there's the proximity to the Willamette River and the recreational possibilities there. On Macadam Avenue, there are lots of restaurants, plus a Zupan's (upscale grocery store).

Johns Landing is also convenient to the National College of Naturopathic Medicine.
