Portland Neighborhoods Guide

Portland Neighborhoods Guide: Ladd's Addition

Pros:

  • Beautiful, unique Portland neighborhood, not a "grid"
  • Close to Hawthorne and downtown Portland

Cons:

  • A tad expensive
  • First-time visitors to your house will probably get lost

Driving into Ladd's Addition is like entering another world. The roads are not set on a traditional grid but rather zig-zag around four little rose gardens and a circular garden right in the middle. Tall trees adorn the sidewalks of the streets entering the area - you could almost forget you are in a big city.

But there are many beautiful homes inside! Ladd's is a wonderful neighborhood to stroll through, especially when the roses are in bloom. If you are an apartment dweller, though, you aren't going to find apartments in Ladd's - only stand-alone houses (perhaps the odd duplex). However, Hawthrone Blvd is the northern border of Ladd's Addition, and there are numerous apartment buildings on or near Hawthorne; also some off 20th and Division. If you live in one of these apartments on the outskirts, it's a nice stroll down into Ladd's. Or find the odd rental home.

Forget about driving through Ladd's Addition as a short cut - you'll just get lost and take more time driving through it than driving around it. My friend calls it "the vortex." It's fun to walk or bike through it, not a pleasant drive, though.
