Portland Neighborhoods Guide

Portland Neighborhoods Guide: Multnomah Village

Pros:

  • Some "urban culture" in a SW neighborhood
  • Not far from PCC Sylvania and Lewis & Clark College
  • Wilson High School
  • Gabriel Park

Cons:

  • Busy roads through the area can get congested
  • The "village" is cool, so is Hillsdale center, but there's not much else exciting.

Southwest Portland is largely suburby, but Multnomah Village is one of the few standouts that has at least some of sidewalk cafe life and fun feel instead of just driving in suburbia. Nearby Hillsdale has some of this feel, too. Capitol Highway, a fairly busy road, connects Hillsdale and Multnomah Village. The "village" is at the intersection of Capitol and Multnomah Blvd, another busy road - but it is still pedestrian-friendly for several blocks in various directions.

The SW Portland neighborhoods have a much different feel from the flat, grid-like east side neighborhoods. Multnomah Village and Hillsdale are (not surprisingly from the name!) hilly and have curvy roads. There is no rail service but very decent bus service into Portland on TriMet. There is even an express bus to OHSU going through part of the area (rush hour service only). For people who will work in SW but want to live closer to Portland, this might be a good choice. Lewis & Clark College is a few miles away and there's direct bus service Multnomah Village on Bus 39. You could also ride your bike - it's not very far. Portland Community College Sylvania Campus is also not far away; TriMet Bus 44 takes you directly there.

Nearby Gabriel Park is a terrific, huge park which also has a dog walking area. Wilson High School, one of the best in Portland, is also in the area.

Homes around this area are mixed. There are some beautiful homes and decent apartments but also some very average, even dumpy housing; some of the streets don't even have sidewalks. Multnomah Blvd and Capitol Highway are very busy roads and can be noisy if you are renting a place located on them. Be careful before you rent a place unseen.

There aren't a lot of apartments directly in the "village" part, but there are several apartment complexes up on Bertha Blvd in Hillsdale and also numerous apartment complexes along busy Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway (going west into Raleigh Hills) that are at least close to the area.
