Website for Accuardi's Old Town Pizza Co
This is another local favorite, though it's not strictly a "pizza joint". It lives in a funky, ancient hotel in Old Town (north of Burnside). Part of it is supposedly haunted. You order your pizza and drink first, separately, then sit at a tiny, rickety table (you can even sit in the old elevator shaft). Decent pizza, but it's more of a restaurant than a casual "pizza joint". A new store on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (presumably linked to the original) is supposed to open in May 2008 just north of Alberta Street.

Website for American Dream Pizza
People rave about this place, but for the life of me I cannot figure out why. I go back about once a year thinking I ought to give them another shot, but I hate the crust, and the sauce has almost no flavor. Perhaps it's because I get plain cheese? The bread stick was nothing to write home about, either.

I too can't comprehend their longevity. Sauce has an unpleasant aftertaste and I always have a headache later.
2. Finn
Yeah, I have to agree with Leonardo. I don't get why they're popular. And the two times I tried it I got major heartburn. Although I did enjoy their decorated pizza box decor.
3. stacey
Yuck. I was excited to get take-out pizza on a rainy friday night. I had 1 bite and put the large pie in the garbage. This was an expensive mistake. I do not think there was any salt in the crust. I understand healthy cooking but you need a little salt when you bake bread. It's like eating paste if you don't. And the meat/ cheese topping was repulsive. I like health food, I like pizza in NY, I like pizza in Italy, I like hot lips pizza. I don't mind most frozen pizza. I will never eat here again.
4. Ben none
i can't agree with you more about american dream. why is it so popular? maybe its the only pizza place around there? whatever it is, i just can't stand it.

This place has created quite a buzz; they actually started in Scholls, Oregon, as I understand it, and got so popular that they decided to try the big city. I haven't yet been there; tried to go on a Tuesday but they are, in fact, closed Monday and Tuesday.

Outstanding thin crust pizza. Careful, they have a lot of rules (but well justified), and you can't necessarily have it your way, as it's not Burger King. But just go with the flow and you'll enjoy the best pizza in town.
2. Greg
I totally agree. I just returned from my first trip to New York where I finally had the best pizza of my life. (I'd heard about authentic New York pizza for years.) Apizza Scholls is the real thing, and I could honestly say the BEST pizza I've ever had outside of new York. The crust is out of this world!
3. Neven mrgan.com
Just like you heard - the crust is fantastic, the sauce and cheese authentic. No, you don't get an X-large meat lovers' pizza, but it's a GOOD thing that you don't. This is real Italian-style pie. Show up at 5 or be ready to wait; that's a testament to their quality. Bring 2 friends or a veeery empty stomach if you order a pizza.

A nice little pizza joint up on Alberta Street. Seems to have good pizza the few times I've been in there - crust is very thin. Service however is not particularly friendly, as if they aren't concerned if you come back or not. But the pizza is good enough that you'll probably come back anyway if you live nearby - there aren't many other options in this area for good pizza.

Decent pizza, I like the vegan. They are unfriendly. I'm not amused by the tip jar with the sign saying "tip or [photo of a burnt slice]. I'll tip on my way out when I actually know the level of service I received, not beforehand.

Burlingame Pizza has been our favorite for many years, 1996-2008! Great tasting unique pizza, located inside Uncle Johns market. However, went there in February 2008 and Burlingame pizza is no longer there!??? Looks like Uncle Johns market is trying to do some pizza in their place. That's not going to work for me. HotLips Pizza is a next great choice!

| 2727 NE Glisan, Portland, OR Get Directions | 503-239-4444 |
In the location of the former Kustom Pizza at NE 28th and Glisan (same phone number, not the same owner), this place is a nice upgrade from your typical pizza joint - a casual sit-down restaurant with a nice atmosphere, serving a few pasta dishes and salads, etc. that still sells pizza slices. They seem to specialize in a cornmeal crust. I tried Dovi Vivi a few weeks after they opened. It's certainly a unique place with good service, and I liked the four-cheese pizza I had. I wouldn't say this type of cornmeal crust was AMAZING but I'd certainly go back. The website is listed above but as of July 2007 it's not hooked up yet. Someday presumably you'll find their menu there. The current menu shows seasonal pizza choices as well as cornmeal crust pizza, lasagna, calzone, and roasted chicken.

Classic NY-style pizza in the Nob Hill area of NW Portland; the most well-known "pizza joint" in Portland. Pizza is usually excellent, with a variety of three or four types of slices. Downside: this place is usually busy (OK, that tells you something!). But that means service can be slow, and because the place is small, seating can be tight. Most seating is "bar" seating with only a few tables. Interior is kinda funky, kinda New York-ish. Turn off your cell phone before ordering or they won't serve you! There used to be an Escape on Alder Street downtown, but a new parking lot was needed...

i am from new york and know good pizza, flying pie makes a cassarole more than a pizza, ingredients are tasty and fresh but jeeeze make up your mind chicago or new york style. you can not eat a whole pizza no way
2. Lynne
This is in my neighborhood. At first I wasn't impressed but after a couple of visits (the menu has so many options) I now know what to order. I love the subs, they remind me of my youth. FYI, you can also get their pizza next door at the refurbished Academy Theatre.
3. Christopher
I love this place. I'm from New York and I miss NY pizza, I enjoy that flying pie makes there own kinda pizza. They are not trying to make NY or chicago pies. Flying Pie kicks ass.
4. Bill in SE PDX
I dig Flying Pie Pizza. We actually order our pies with 1/2 the normal amount of toppings as they tend to load them up too much (you get a lot of food for the money). But they don't have a problem cutting things back a bit if you ask. Not sure why this doesn't qualify as a "pizza joint", but it as a great joint nevertheless. Great mix of people dining there - has a bit of a midwestern feel to it. Good place, good pizza.

[Raleigh Hills Location has closed.] Hot Lips was the first pizza I ever had when I moved to Portland, and I've been hooked ever since. I lived near the PSU restaurant for many years but still visit them - all of them, depending on where I am in town. Their slices are similar to NY style but with more natural flavoring; it's still pizza but doesn't seem quite as greasy. That makes them still good but slightly different than classic NY style (e.g., Escape from New York). Sicilian slices also available. The pesto breadsticks are excellent. This may sound strange...but their Diet Coke fountain mix is excellent. Maybe that means that other places' soda just isn't as good. If you want to make your own pizza, Hot Lips will save you half the trouble; you can buy their dough and make your own pizza from there. One of the few (only?) Portland pizza joints where you can buy dough. It's a popular concept. Hot Lips supports "green" practices and supports local farmers - a very progressive company. They have electric delivery carts at some of their stores. Although it isn't advertised, some of the stores have free WiFi if you have a laptop.

My slice had a huge sharp toothpick in it. I brought to the attention of counter dude, he just scratched his head and expressed surprise that such a thing could happen. No apology or offer of a beer or another slice.
2. Neven Mrgan mrgan.com
It is, in fact, NOT a beautiful pizza. At 2:30 pm my slices were dry, stale, and generally sad in appearance. If Strom Thurmond were a pizza, he'd be a slice at this place. The crust was dry and cornmealy; the cheese was burnt and odd. It looked like the slice may have, at some point, in some previous life, been respectable. But in this one it was not. The place is in a cool location, I guess. They're large, which only underscores the general emptiness and grime. Skip.

A fun, happy (and busy!) little pizza pub with live music in bar half of it, along the lately thriving Mississippi Avenue in North Portland. Live music every night! Cheese slices are good. A very mellow, non-smoking place I would recommend for a visit. Just be prepared to wait in a long line for a slice at times.

What goes best with pizza? Cold beer and music. This is the finest place in Portland to get all this. The music is varied throughout the week, fine selection of beer, and the pizza is thin, not too cheesy and has great flavor. Good topping selection as well! You won't be disappointed.

Nonna Emila's is a popular Italian restaurant in Aloha, Oregon (west suburbs) with good, deep-dish pizza. The Hillsboro location is closing on Feb 1st. Apparently the rent on that place is really high. Kinda sad actually.
[Pizza Schmizza has been acquired by Figaro's, a national chain based in Salem, Oregon. Read more here. ] This was the biggest "local" pizza chain in Portland (not counting Pizza Hut, Dominos, and the big corporate chains). The stores are intentionally funky and fun, with different themes of decor (bicyles, old video games, etc.) But these are just typical pizza joints where you order and at the counter. Schmizza started in downtown Hillsboro in the mid-90's in tiny, cramped restaurant space that is long gone but much beloved at a time when there was NO pizza of any non-cardboard sort within miles of where some hungry engineers worked nearby. Since those simple days, Schmizza has branched out all over Portland. You can find a Schmizza just about anywhere in Portland; there are a few stores in Vancouver as well. Since Schmizza hit the big time, I'd say the quality has suffered a bit (and prices have gone up!). Many of the stores are franchises, so there isn't the same level of attention you'd find from a small store. But Schmizza is far better than Pizza Hut or any of the corporate alternatives.

Like Pizza Schmizza, Pizzicato is a local chain (there are a few locations outside of the Portland Metro area - one in Bend, Oregon, one in California). Prices are similiar to Pizza Schizza's (on the higher side) but the restaurants are nice. Interior decor is much more conventional and uniform across locations that the funkified Pizza Schmizza stores. Feels less like a "pizza joint" than Schmizza does, though - has more of a slick feel. The pizza is good, and, I'm told, so are the salads. You can get free soda refills by asking.

Roccos branched out in the past to have more stores in the Portland area, but for some reason the franchsing didn't last and now they are back to just the one store across from Powell's at 10th and W. Burnside downtown, in a little corner restaurant. Roccos has thick-crust pizza, more like Chicago-style than NY-style. One slice is a lot. Personally, I do not care for their slices, however - I prefer NY-style. I don't like the after-taste of the sauce, either, but some people seem to like it. Free drink refills.

1. Left coast Pizza guy
I have been to Rovente's on Hawthorn a few times and have come to the conclusion (along with my friends) that this is NOT the place to go. The slices were always burned, the staff surly, service slow and the shop was filthy. I just could not understand how it was possible to burn EVERY slice I ever bought there. Additionally, I always left feeling like I had been through a drive-by shooting. This is to say nothing of the ever-present dirty feeling of the place. Whoever owns this place is seriously invested in NOT putting any money of any kind into it. On top of everything else, the pizza just was not all that good. Not on my list of recommended shops in Portland.
2. sal mon
Delivery time was ridiculously long, despite several calls to inquire about the delay. Pizza quality was better than average, but nowhere near the quality necessary to offset the poor service.
3. Shayla
The other people who left comments must be crazy. I have been ordering from Rovente for years and I love it. One time, the pizza was a little burned. But the continuous friendly demeanor and prompt delivery more than make up for it. I absolutely love Rovente pizza. I have never had a better pizza in my entire life. The prices are excellent. The service is outstanding. And the pizza....the pizza is absolutely phenominal.

This place is awesome. They are a huge relief from the pretentious, rude, and often not that tasty pizza usually found on Hawthorne. And, the pizza is really yummy!!

this place delivers until late and goes where a lot of places won't! It's good and filling and they always have coupons!!! Get it, you'll be glad you did!
7. Foodie Girl
Rovente's is my delivery pizza joint. Deliveries are free, and they make a decent traditional pie that arrives hot but not soggy. The other pizza places in the neighborhood eithet don't deliver, thei pies aren't good as a delivered dinner (It's a Beautiful Pizza pies show up soggy--the bready crust overburdened with toppings only works as a fresh single slice at the restaurant), or theor prices are twice what Rovente's are. So it's not gourmet, but a damn good pie. Sometimes delivery does get backed up (they get busy on weekend nights) but the delivery guys are always pleasant.
Local chain advertising their pizza as "real hand-tossed New York Pizza" that has popped up in the Portland area - started in Sandy, Oregon I was told. First two stores were on MLK in NE Portland; another is at SE Belmont and 10th (bowling alley building). Pizza first of all is cheap, and the owners have blanketed the neighborhoods (in NE) with coupons. Pizza is not bad but not fantastic. Cheeze slices taste kind of generic. Breadsticks are huge and pretty tasty. There is a Sparky's near my home and it is good enough that I eat here regularly.

I don't know, I think Sparky's is pretty good. They put A LOT of cheese on their pizza, which I love. And they have some pretty elegant pies as well, like the California, which has artichoke hearts, chicken pieces, sun-dried tomatoes, and A LOT of cheese. There's also one with Cheddar and pepperoni. It's worth a try, i lie to get it once a week if I can. Adam

2. Neven mrgan.com
Stark Naked is a small, not terribly clean place in an odd area of SE Stark. There's outdoor seating, which is pretty nice on a sunny day. The slices are ok - about a 3/5. The crust is thin and crispy, though that's mostly due to the amount of cornmeal on it. The sauce is a little Pizza Hutty, and the cheese isn't fully melted. It's an edible slice, but not memorable or worth driving for.

I'm now a regular at this place. The owners and employees are friendly, and the pizza has gotten a lot better since they opened (Formerly Richie B's) They are competition for "Escape From New York", with not only pizza but sandwiches, unlike Escape. And unlike Escape From New York, there are more than a few little tables plus there are free refills on sodas.

Love the site and generally agree with your recommendations, but I've been here several times for one of my pizza reports and really find it to be one of the worst in town.

I have been to Tributes many times since the name change and would have to agree that it is one of the better pizza places in town. Unlike the "thrown out of New York" joint down the street these people actually come close to making real East Coast food. The staff is generally friendly, the customers are not overly pretentious (again, not like the "other" joint) and the food is surprisingly consistent. Get a slice of pep on Monday and it will taste just like a slice you got on Friday. The deep dish prices are way steep (I once told the girl behind the counter I felt like I was being held up by Al Capone) but a regular slice can be as low as $2.50. The cheese is a bit tired and really needs pep to spice it up a bit. The sizes are decent and if you ask nicely they will make an effort to wrap it up so you can actually carry it down the street. Not the BEST pizza in town but definatly up there in the top five.

I haven't been to this place, at the corner of NE 60th and Glisan close to Providence Hospital, but I have heard one good word-of-mouth review of it. It's a tiny, non-descript place; you have to look carefully to find it.

This is a really good place, though the pizza has pretty much nothing to do with Italian pizza. An entire quarter of a pizza is only $2.50. The sauce and crust that the Greek owner of this shop makes are quite unique and pretty different from anything else I've had. Try it!

This place - a non-smoking bar - is a gem. It has a nice atmosphere a friendly waitstaff, and - most importantly - great pizza. You can get slices or a whole pie. The slice prices have steadily increased (now $3/slice for cheese, just $2/slice only a few years ago) but still worth it. It's a "table service" place with few other menu options besides pizza and salads but it feels classier than a typical pizza joint, cleaner than your typical bar.

Never been to this place, but they have Italian take-out food in addition to pizza.

Vinnies is pretty good pizza. Their calzones are good too. Lots of toppings, and pretty big pies. Good prices, friendly staff, and the delivery guys are nice too. We have Vinnies 1-2 times per month (more often back when we were remodeling our kitchen!)

I grew up near Philadelphia where great NY-style pizza was plentiful. I got used to cheap little pizza joints where you could just walk in and order a slice at the counter. Where I grew up, these types of places were literally everywhere.
When I moved to Portland in the early 90's, pizza joints were few and far between. Yes, you could find pizza at restaurants - but what if you just wanted a slice? Escape from New York and Hot Lips were about IT. One by one I found new places, but there were so few that I decided to compile a list of them.
Since those days, Portland has experienced a kind of Pizza boom. A lot of little pizza joints have opened up, plus local chains like Pizza Schmizza and Pizzicato have expanded, so it's much easier to find pizza all over town than ever. I hope that this page will help you find them.
